Andy Stevenson Garden Sculptures

Featured Maker - July 2017

Each month we will be turning the spotlight on one of our regular makers, to give you an insight into their work, and to direct you to more information about them.

Andy Stevenson — Garden Sculptures

Andy Stevenson weldingAndy Stevenson originally trained as an agricultural engineering technician at Rycotewood College, Oxfordshire. This gave him a broad grounding in many disciplines which has come in very useful over the years.

Following his training, Andy worked as a technician on a wide range of electro-mechanical equipment from old mechanical cash registers back in the late seventies to state of the art electronic laser/electronic equipment. After doing 35,000 miles in six months as a field service engineer, Andy felt a change was due so he started a small business fitting tow bars and designing and building trailers which is where his design skills were honed. Ten years later regulation and imports forced another change and Andy went into heavy mechanical fitting working on trains and then tanks.

Andy Stevenson Spider SculptureHis current business, Andy Stevenson Garden Sculpture was started seven years ago. Although not having an artistic qualification, Andy could always draw and, thanks to a youth filled with Airfix models, 3D appreciation came naturally. Andy has evolved a style of his own using modern industrial techniques and materials. He sometimes creates work using everyday items in a different way to how they were originally intended.

Andy StevensonSince Andy's sculpture is mainly for the garden, it is influenced by subjects that suit this setting so natural, mystical and organic themes abound. He also has a wide range of kinetic sculpture from aircraft to atoms. For the future, larger sculptures are planned together with the use of more exotic metals coupled with the latest welding technology.

Andy Stevenson Flower SculptureAndy's work is mainly sold at fairs as he finds this to be the most effective medium to sell his type of work. Each piece is different and the shows allow customers to choose their own particular item. His work is now very popular and, he says, there are some gardens in southern England with more of his work in than he has in his own!

You can meet Andy and view his work at our next event at RHS Garden Hyde Hall.
